Keyboard layout editor

Open Settings > Keyboard > Edit layout…. The editor opens your current layout. Shipped layouts become a new copy; your own saved layouts can be edited in place. Keyboard layouts arrange keys and assign actions. Themes change their appearance.

Choose Start from… to copy another layout, or Blank to start empty. Select the name box and type a unique name with the VR keyboard. Text entered in an editor box goes there rather than to Windows or VRChat.

On Arrange, click a key in the preview, then use these controls:

Control What it changes
Across, Down The selected key’s position.
Wide, Tall The selected key’s size.
Snap to Movement and size increments: 1/4, 1/2 or 1 key unit.
Add a key, Copy this key, Remove this key Add, duplicate or remove a key.
Add a row Start a new row with one new key.
Row left, Row right Move the selected key’s whole row.
Width, Height, Fit to my keys Resize the keyboard area or fit it around the keys.

Use Undo and Redo to step through layout edits.

On What keys type, select a key, then a group and an action. Groups include letters, numbers, symbols, modifiers, editing keys, function keys, arrows, number pad and shortcuts. The shortcuts include Copy, Paste, Cut, Select all, Undo and Redo.

The key’s text can have up to six characters. Clear restores its normal text. Changing that label does not change its action. Letter labels normally follow the active Windows keyboard language; a custom label replaces that automatic label.

In What keys type > Modifiers, choose Left Shift, Right Shift, Left Ctrl, Right Ctrl, Left Alt, Right Alt (AltGr), Left Win, Right Win to make the selected key a sticky modifier. Tap once for the next key, or double-tap quickly to lock it until tapped again.

Custom key text belongs to the layout, not the theme. It stays fixed while Shift or AltGr is active. Use Clear to restore the automatic label if you want its face to follow the character it will type.

Read Checks before saving. A layout needs at least one key, no overlaps, no keys outside its bounds and no unassigned keys. Fix the reported issue; Fit to my keys can fix a keyboard area that is too small.

Turn on Try typing to test keys in the editor’s own text area. This is a simple preview using physical key names, not a full Windows language or shortcut test. Turn it off to select and edit keys again.

Press Save to my layouts. A successful save also selects the layout for your keyboard. You can select it later under Settings > Keyboard > Layout. Files are stored in the user Layouts folder; see saved data.

Unsaved edits do not change the keyboard in use. Closing or choosing another starting layout warns once; repeat the action to discard. Delete is available for your own saved layouts and needs a second press to confirm. Shipped layouts cannot be deleted here.
